Laser Computer to Plate (CTP) is used in the printing industry to produce printing plates for offset printing presses. In traditional offset printing, a plate is made by creating a film negative of the artwork or design to be printed. This film is then used to expose a light-sensitive printing plate, which is then chemically processed to create the image that will be published.
With Laser CTP, the negative film step is eliminated. Instead, a computer-controlled laser beam directly exposes the light-sensitive printing plate. The laser creates the image by burning away the coating on the scale where the idea will be printed.
