Investment in R&D in Automotive Sector
Rise in the R&D activities associated with automotive sector, is driven by software, Industry 4.0 and digitization. It is creating powerful analytical tools for the development of products and services. New materials and breakthrough manufacturing techniques are vastly changing the offerings of products in this sector. Customer’s behaviors and demand are also changing constantly demanding advanced features in the products. For instance, autonomous driving has moved from the realm of science fiction to a very real possibility during the past twenty years. All this has happened due to rapid developments of radar technology and microprocessor capacity.
Autonomous vehicles including unmanned aircrafts uses a combination of forward-facing cameras and radar systems that collect relevant information about road conditions for further processing. In the European Union (EU), Germany has been a trailblazer in autonomous vehicle policy on account of its important automotive sector. In the UK, the government announced in March 2018, that it had commissioned a review of driving laws 'to ensure that the UK remains one of the best places in the world to develop, test and drive self-driving vehicles. The USA and Europe are hardly the only ones paying increasing attention to the ongoing developments in the field of autonomous vehicles.
Driving simulators are widely used in autonomous vehicles as these vehicles require large-scale development and testing in a wide range of scenarios before they can be deployed. However, driving the necessary number of miles in the real world is time- and capital-intensive. Moreover, it is not possible to encounter the rare and dangerous scenarios needed for comprehensive autonomous vehicle validation. Thus, driving simulators are used as autonomous vehicles must be trained and tested to respond to all driving situations.
Driving simulators allow researchers to study driver training issues and driver behavior under conditions in which it would be illegal and/or unethical to place drivers. Vehicle designers can use advanced simulation tools to virtually test these scenarios quickly and cost effectively. This not only accelerates development but also reduces the need for physical road tests. Thus, rise in the research in automotive sector, drives the demand for driving simulator market.
