Cloves are the dried, unopened, nail-shaped reddish-brown flower buds of the evergreen tree Syzygium of a family named Myrtaceae which are used as a spice. They possess a strong aroma, are hot and pungent in taste, and have a powerful fragrant odor that is warm, and strongly sweet hence are used to add flavour while preparing food like meats, rice dishes, sauces, and bakery products.
Cloves are a rich source of magnesium, a key trace mineral for optimal brain functions and strengthening bones, along with calcium & phosphorus and plant compounds that offer antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits. The amazing ingredient, eugenol in clove is very effective against many harmful bacteria, fungi, and viruses. The anti-viral and blood purification potential of clove decreases the toxicity in blood and increases the resistance against diseases by stimulating whole blood cells. The other prominent benefits of cloves are they promote digestion, control diabetes, are good for bones and joints, boost the immune system, reduce body pain and inflammation, relieve toothache, prevent cancer, ease breathing, and stimulate blood circulation.
Clove is available in many forms in the market. A clove is made out of the stem and bulbous head. The best quality cloves are screened manually and selected by hand and are exported as hand-picked cloves to the global market. It is a valuable, and precious spice of the world and is commonly used in garam masala, salads, pickles and biryanis, dal, curries, soup, and tea. They are also used in several dental products like toothpaste, dental creams, throat sprays, and mouthwashes. Indonesia, Malaysia, India, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, and Madagascar are some of the countries that contribute to the production of cloves. Dried cloves are a key ingredient in Indian masala chai-tea and a part of many spice blends including Chinese five spice, and Indian garam masala, and are often used along with cinnamon and nutmeg in sweet dishes, especially pumpkin pie. On the other side, in Western cuisine, cloves are used to stud the baked hams, as a pickling spice, and in mulled wine. Also, they are inherently low in calories, making them ideal for weight loss, besides supplying ample amounts of fiber, to facilitate smooth digestion.
Cloves are currently used in three different forms which are whole dried buds, ground spice, and essential oil. Normally, all these forms share similar properties, the only difference is the degree of their potency wherein the oil has shown the highest potency and hence it is often diluted with the almond oil. Whole cloves also possess a good amount of oil because of which they are also endowed with a medium potency however ground cloves are considered as the least potent form as they generally lose most of the essential oil in this form.
Furthermore, cloves have been used not only for culinary purposes like food flavourings but also in traditional medicines and perfume production. On the other hand, clove essential oil can be used for dental care including the treatment of gum infections, burns, and respiratory and digestive disorders. Additionally, cloves are a good source of vitamin A, beta carotene vitamin B1, vitamin B6, vitamin C, vitamin K, and riboflavin, beneficial for the body to maintain healthy mucus membranes and skin.
The estimated global clove production was reported to be 1,96,795 tonnes from an area of 6,75,685 ha during the year 2021. Of which, Indonesia is the largest producer in the world holding 85% of the area and 74% of the total output.
To conclude, clove is a valued spice almost across the world because of its bundle of benefits and its market is currently witnessing stable growth with the rise in the demand for the same but a little less supply for the same in some of the countries like India. Indonesia and Madagascar are the leading countries in producing and exporting cloves across the world.

The amazing ingredient, eugenol in clove is very effective against many harmful bacteria, fungi, and viruses. The anti-viral and blood purification potential of clove decreases the toxicity in blood and increases the resistance against diseases by stimulating whole blood cells. The other prominent benefits of cloves are they promote digestion, control diabetes, are good for bones and joints, may improve liver health, are helpful to regulate blood sugar, boost the immune system, reduce body pain and inflammation, relieve toothache, prevent cancer, eases breathing and stimulates blood circulation. This long list of clove benefits adds to the need and demand for clove in the market at the current time
For instance, the global clove production was approximately 1,96,795 tonnes in 2021 The demand for cloves in India has witnessed a notable increase in the demand for cloves in recent years which has exceeded the capacity of production within the country which means India has to be dependent on other countries to meet the demand. Thus, it can be said that the benefits of cloves are driving the market and rising the demand continuously.

Cloves are grown in well-loamy soils of the humid tropics hence it is necessary to be careful with the land however, with the limitation of land area and continuous rise in demand, farmers and companies are bound to use the same land every year for the cultivation of cloves resulting to the degradation in the fertility of the land
On the other side, limited resources including land, labour and seed availability, manures and chemical fertilizers, plant protection techniques, and nonavailability of fertile land are also some important problems faced by farmers or producers while producing clove. Also, the study reveals that clove cultivation normally faces challenges such as low genetic variability, poor agronomic practices, inadequate soil fertility management, biotic stress factors, senile plantations, unorganized markets, and labour shortages during harvest because of which company and country are bound to depend on the other country to meet the demand for clove. For instance, the average production of cloves in India is approximately 1,200 tonnes however the demand for the same is more than 20,000 to 22,000 tonnes hence, around 95% of the demand has been met through imported cloves. All these challenges hinder the domestic production capacity as well the profitability.

Cloves are a part of many spice mixes, sauces, and dishes. Which makes them an attractive spice item while cooking. The growing and evolving interest in ethnic cuisines and developments in spice mixes are the leading drivers behind the demand for cloves and focus on, this can also be an opportunity for the existing as well as upcoming companies. They are largely consumed by European people having backgrounds from Southeast Asian, Middle Eastern, and North African regions. These consumers often buy spice mixes from traditional brands found in ethnic retailers. The Iglo brand is a traditional brand of frozen foods in the German market. Iglo has expanded to ready-to-eat meals inspired by popular international cuisines, which include Asian recipes. New products require more spices to be used.
Covid-19 commonly named coronavirus, is an illness caused by a virus competent enough to break through a person’s immune system if a person is exposed to so much of the virus. It means that if a person is infected by the virus and not treated immediately then the virus may get spread to the major part of the body weakening the immune system which can cause further serious health-related issues. However, this was not the same for everyone as it is dependent on how strong a person’s immune system is. If the immune system is strong then the body is infected by the virus, and the virus would not affect the health. COVID-19 virus infecting the person’s health directly became a universal reason for impacting every industry globally.
As per a small study by the National Institutes of Health, severe COVID-19 may cause long-lasting alterations to the innate immune system which is the first line of defense against pathogens. However, cloves, being a rich source of plant compounds that offer antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits, became a fighting factor against the COVID-19 virus. The amazing ingredient, eugenol in clove is very effective against many harmful bacteria, fungus, and viruses. The anti-viral and blood purification potential of clove decreases the toxicity in blood and increases the resistance against diseases by stimulating whole blood cells.
The traditional therapeutic use of clove in respiratory disorders and its activity against different types of viruses, alongside its anti-inflammatory, immunostimulatory, and antithrombotic properties, are all attractive features highlighting its potential in the fight against COVID-19 disease. To experiment with the same, cloves are boiled in water with other plant materials for 15 minutes and the released volatile active principles are being inhaled by patients for five minutes. Such surveys have been conducted in India and Morocco when the countries were having low pandemic impacts. It was discovered that 93% of the interviewed Indian people believed that spices help cure COVID-19 or other viral infections and can help boost immunity. They are reported as one of the most frequently used spices and herbs during the COVID-19 pandemic together with other plants like cinnamon, ginger, black pepper, garlic, neem, and basil.
