Electron beam processing is a technology with a broad range of commercial applications. It provides users with an effective and efficient means to bring about useful changes in the properties and performance of polymers and other materials. The technology is also widely used for the sterilization of medical devices, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. Electron beam accelerators can be made in a number of ways: cathode ray tubes (CRT) that sweep or scan the process area, electron wide-area curtains and sealed vacuum tube systems. There are several different methods to accelerate electrons to form a beam. The accelerators used by E-BEAM Services are direct current, which provide a continuous versus a pulsed beam. Electrons are extracted from a electron gun located within in a high level vacuum system. The electrons are accelerated by a magnetic field of three to five million volts and scanned into a curtain of electrons. The electrons then exit the vacuum system through a thin titanium foil, where they strike the product that is being conveyed at a controlled speed through the curtain of electrons. The voltage of the magnetic field is called the energy of the accelerator, and it determines how deeply the electrons will penetrate into the product. The dose is controlled by varying the beam current and line speed to accumulate the proper quantity of electrons in the product.

The clinical experience accumulated in decades shows that, to be efficient, the radiation treatment must be delivered with a high physical selectivity. At present, electron linear accelerators are the primary equipment of a modern radiotherapy department and are used to irradiate a large proportion of the patients for at least part of the treatment. Nowadays, the majority of the patients referred to a radiation therapy department are treated with a linear accelerator for at least part of their treatment. Linear accelerators thus play, and will keep playing, a significant role in cancer management in general and are responsible for the therapeutic success obtained in many tumor treatments. It is likely that this will remain true for the foreseeable future. This is expected to drive the growth of the electron beam accelerator market.
