Debris filter is an equipment, which removes unwanted deposited material. This unwanted layer accumulates on the machines such as heat exchanger, condenser, which deteriorate the surface of machine. The accumulated layer is known as macro fouling. This fouling material consist of living and non-living or organic origin.
Debris Filters provide protection from macro fouling for condensers, critical heat exchange equipment and process water while the plant is on-line. The deposited layer is located at the upstream of the condenser, debris filter acts as a barrier to the larger deposits than aperture to pass through downstream. The debris includes traveling screens or mollusc shells.
The debris filter mechanism involves on-line operation, it uses a multiple suction cleaning rotor to remove debris through reverse pressure from a small percentage of the flow, by the exchanger. The filter operates on differential, timer or manually with debris sent to the plant discharge. It utilizes the existing systems own pressure to self-flush when required. When debris fouls the filter element, this creates a higher differential. The integrated differential transmitters detect this rise in differential pressure and initiate a cleaning cycle and after that the discharge valve is opened to pass out the unwanted material.
The debris filter market is segmented into two types of debris filter are W type filter, which is placed at the inlet of a condenser to collect all debris that that interfere with the cooling water flow in the condenser tubes, downstream tube-cleaning system and V type debris filters are separator and self-cleaning strainers. The debris filters are classified into various mesh sizes ranging from 2mm-6mm sizes.
The advantages of debris filter include long tube life by prevention of macro-fouling, lower operating differential, minimization of flush water discharge, external access to drive components, no internal lubricants or contaminants in contact with flow, heavy wall carbon steel filter shell, it has internal rubber line, epoxy coating line, exterior coating as per the customer requirements, optional emergency by-pass is available.
The application of debris filters is in cooling water circuits and it plays a vital role in prevention of macro fouling from debris and its other uses includes power plant cooling water for fossil & nuclear sector, industrial cooling water, petrol-chemical process water, irrigation systems, steel mills and numerous other plant types.

The design and the internal construction of these V type debris filter is based on the water flow, type, size and quantity of the debris and the cooling water inlet pressure. The rotation of the flushing assembly is facilitated by an electric gear drive mounted outside the filter housing. The advantages of V type debris filter are easy to maintain, installation can be done horizontally or vertically, flexible design.
W type debris filter is placed at the inlet of a condenser to collect all debris that that interfere with the cooling water flow in the condenser tubes, downstream tube-cleaning system. The debris have by-passed the intake screens into the pump pits and tunnel carrying unwanted material such as seaweed, grass, shells, eels. When the water enters into the W type cylindrical piece, which has a rotating wheel, it gets divided into a number of radials, debris-collection compartments. The water flows across the cylindrical compartment and debris are collected and stored in the compartments through screening panel fitted in the downstream compartment. When the wheel starts rotating, it is driven by a peripheral gear device. Each compartment passes in front of an upstream scoop which is connected through the flushing valve and pipe to the downstream side of the condenser. The condenser high pressure compels the water, to pass through filter and it removes all the debris to the condenser outfall. The advantage of this filter includes, it increases power output of industrial plants, debris-free machine, prevents tube sheet cleaning, avoid turbulence generated tube decay or deterioration, robust, no maintenance.
