According to the American Membrane Technology Association, Electrodialysis Reversal System (EDR) is referred to as a water desalination procedure in which electricity is applied to electrodes for pulling naturally occurring dissolved salts through an ion exchange membrane in order to separate the water from the salts. EDR produces two effluent streams; a high salinity concentrates and a low salinity product water. In this reversal process, the polarity of the electrodes used is switched at fixed intervals to reduce the scale formation and thereby subsequently fouling and allows the EDR to gain higher water recoveries. EDR is used in treating brackish waters with moderate total dissolved solids (TDS) and water which has a high scaling potential due to the elevated levels of specific contaminants such as strontium (Sr) and barium (Ba). EDR is also effective on high silica (SiO2) feedwater. These EDR systems can often operate without scaling and fouling chemical feed, and they can also treat high-fouling sources more efficiently than Reverse Osmosis (RO). EDR systems do not provide a barrier to remove micro-organisms as done in Reverse Osmosis (RO), Ultrafiltration (UF), Microfiltration (MF), and Nanofiltration (NF) membranes.
